Step 3: Seek Advisement, Register for Classes, and Attend Orientation

Seek Advisement

Advisors will help you with identifying courses and creating an educational plan to meet your academic goals.

Academic Advisement is available to all students. Students who are new to college (have never taken a course at a college) and who are pursuing a degree are required to take the New Student Orientation (see below) and then work with an Academic Advisor prior to enrolling in courses.

As a Rio Salado student you have access to an online tool called RioCompass to help you stay on track and in contact with your Academic Advisor. RioCompass is used to create individualized check sheets, contact notes, task list items, and semester-by-semester plans.

Do you have previous college credit?

Do you have previous college credit? A transcript evaluation is the process of looking at prior credits and how they may be applied to your current program. Please submit all prior transcripts through the Transcript Evaluation Request Form. Transcripts may be official or unofficial for transcript evaluation purposes.

Prerequisite Verification Request

If your class has a requirement (prerequisite) from outside the Maricopa Community Colleges, please submit either official or unofficial transcripts along with the Prerequisite Verification Request Form.

Register for Classes

To make the registration process easier, review the recommended course subject(s) and number(s) (e.g., ENG 101, MAT152, etc.) that you have discussed with your Academic Advisor.

How to Register for Classes

1. Go to your Student Center and log in with your MEID and password.

2. Click “Add a Class.”

3. On the Add Classes page, click “Search.”

4. Enter the subject prefix (e.g., ACC, BIO, ENG) in the Course Subject field.

5. Choose your desired section from the search results. Your class must start in the date range listed under Meeting Dates. Click “Select Class” for more details.

6. Select your desired start date from the pop-up calendar. The class will now be in your Shopping Cart. To add more classes, repeat Steps 3-6 above.

7. When you are done, click “Finish.”

Complete New Student Orientation

The New Student Orientation (NSO101) will cover topics such as college success tips, college policies and resources, financial literacy, wellness, and how to navigate in your RioLearn classroom. This is a free, non-credit, resource to help you be successful in reaching your goals!

  • NSO101 will be available in RioLearn the Monday after you have applied to the college. Please complete NSO101 prior to registering for classes
  • The class will take approximately 2 hours to complete.

If you have already taken classes at Rio Salado and want to take NSO101, email and include your name and student ID number.
