Employer-Sponsored ABE Classes
In 1979, the ABE program was established and enrolled 700 students in its first year. Today, over 13,000 students are taking advantage of this service. Rio Salado is experienced in developing programs for the following special adult populations:
- Adults who did not complete high school
- Non-English speaking adults
- Incarcerated individuals
- Adults with physical and mental challenges
- Other adults considered “at risk” in the general population
- Blair Liddicoat, Associate Dean, Adult Basic Education
Classes are self-paced. Instructors work with students to identify their individual learning goals and to develop plans to reach those goals.
Classes are funded by the Arizona Department of Education, Adult Education Division.
The Rio Salado ABE program fulfills a great need in Arizona. Nearly half a million adults in Maricopa County are neither enrolled in school nor have a high school credential according to the 2000 U.S. Census. That number carries even more weight when you take into consideration that fact that the greatest predictor of a child’s success in school is the education level of the parent. The ABE program offers adults the opportunity at a better future for themselves and their families. After completing and ABE program, 85 percent of adult learners were successful at improving their employment, increasing both their skills and pay level.
