Honors Scholarships

Scholarships awarded by the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) require students to have lawful presence in the United States and live in Maricopa County (referred to as "in-county residency"). You must complete the Student Declaration Form and submitting an approved HB2008 citizenship document. Students most commonly provide an Arizona driver’s license (front and back copy), U.S. Passport or birth certificate. Awards will be applied to your student account based on your establishment of eligibility and based on lawful presence in U.S. on HB2008 requirements and financial aid.
Note: See individual scholarship criteria for other requirements which are described below.

Chancellor’s Scholarship

The Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded by the college each year and covers one-year of full in-county tuition, up to 18 credits per semester, and fees, plus $250 for books and supplies.

NOTE: This award cannot be held concurrently with any other Honors scholarship.

The application process begins in February of each year, with scholarship recipients being notified in April; applications are located on the Rio Salado College Honors Program Web page. To be eligible to apply for the Chancellor’s Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria, in addition to lawful presence and in-county residency:

  • Current Honors Achievement Award student
  • Cumulative MCCCD GPA of 3.25 or higher

Once students apply and are awarded the Chancellor's Scholarship, the following is required:

  • Full-time enrollment for the duration of the scholarship
  • Successful completion of at least 12 credit hours each semester, including at least one 3 credit hour Honors course
  • Maintain a MCCCD cumulative grade-point-average of 3.25 or higher
  • Completion of two Co-Curricular Activities
  • Successfully complete HONORS100-00PHS non-credit course
  • Remain in good standing with Rio Salado College

Chancellor's Scholarship Funding:

  • Chancellor's Scholarship funds are awarded at the beginning of the fall semester.

Applications for the Chancellor's Scholarship will become available in February 2017.

Foundation Scholarship

Rio Salado awards the Foundation Scholarship—up to $1,000 each year—to one or more students receiving the HAA. The application process begins in February, and scholarship recipients are notified in April. You can find applications on the Rio Salado College Honors Program Web page. To be eligible to apply for the Foundation Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria, in addition to maintaining lawful presence and in-county residency:

  • Current HAA student
  • Cumulative MCCCD GPA of 3.25 or higher

Once students apply for and are awarded the Foundation Scholarship, the following are required:

  • Full-time enrollment for the duration of the scholarship
  • Successful completion of at least 12 credit hours each semester, including at least one 3-credit- hour Honors course
  • Cumulative MCCCD GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Completion of one co-curricular activity
  • Successful completion of HONORS100-00HAA non-credit course
  • Good standing status with Rio Salado College

Foundation Scholarship Funding:

  • Foundation Scholarship funds are awarded at the beginning of the fall semester.

Applications for the Foundation Scholarship will become available in February 2017.

Honors Achievement Award (HAA)

The HAA is a prorated, reimbursement scholarship that ranges from $244 to $500, depending on the total number of successfully completed college-level credits in the fall and spring semesters. To be eligible to apply for the HAA, students must meet the following criteria, in addition to maintaining lawful presence and in-county residency:

  • Successful completion of 12 or more college-level credits (100 or 200 level courses) at Rio Salado College or another MCCCD college and a cumulative MCCCD GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Placement test scores may not be used for Honors Achievement Award eligibility
  • Completion of the online Honors Program application.

Once students apply and are accepted for the HAA, the following are required:

  • Successful completion (grade of C or higher) of at least one 3-credit-hour Honors course each semester
  • Cumulative MCCCD GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Completion of one co-curricular activity
  • Successful completion of HONORS100-00HAA non-credit course
  • Good standing status with Rio Salado College

HAA Funding:

  • You must pay for all courses up front or establish a payment plan before the due date listed on your statement
  • You will be reimbursed after you have completed all courses each semester; the number of successfully completed college-level credits determines your award amount

Note: Even if you have fulfilled the HB2008 requirement, you may not be eligible for a REFUND. If you have received a federal financial aid package that has maxed out your Cost of Attendance, you will receive your Honors Achievement Award via a reduction in your unsubsidized loan package.
