Sustainability @ Rio

Sustainability is more than just

                "Thinking Green!"

For Rio Salado College, caring about the environment represents a lifestyle change that blends into daily routines. The college has adopted several measures to “think green” and beyond. It is in this forward-thinking nature that we have become committed to the principles of sustainability. That is, we try to meet the needs of the present generation while taking care of the future.

We take a broad view of sustainability, including socio-cultural, environmental and economic dynamics to make sustainability bearable, equitable, and viable. To put it simply, we aren’t blindly “going green.” We’re carefully weighing the benefits and costs in the big picture and taking an approach that makes sense.

Sustainability Programs:
Sustainability & Ecological Literacy
Sustainable Food Systems
eLearning Design

In October 2009, Rio Salado College was named a winner of America’s Greenest Campus contest for having the highest average of carbon reduction per person. The contest, sponsored by Climate Culture, was the first nationwide challenge among colleges to reduce the carbon footprints of their students, faculty, alumni and staff. The prize winnings are being used to develop a community garden for the Sustainable Food Systems program and the new Cafe @ Rio.
