Program Site
The American University of Rome is set in the capital of Italy. Known as "The Eternal City," Rome is filled with legacies of the past, such as the Roman Forum and the Coliseum. Contemporary Rome also offers a host of activities, notably theatre. Rome is also an important center for the study of International Relations and International Business. Founded in 1969 as an independent, coeducational, four-year institution, The American University of Rome is located in a beautiful villa on Rome's highest hill, the Gianicolo, on the right bank of the Tiber River. The villa has a complete range of facilities, including a library, student lounge, and computer center. Surrounded by its own garden, the campus is close to major parks in Rome. The university has an international enrollment of approximately 350 students each year, and its faculty come from leading educational, business, and government centers throughout Europe and the United States.

Academic Program Highlights
Students may take 12 to 16 credits in a variety of disciplines, including one required course in Italian language, which is offered at all levels, from beginning through advanced. No previous knowledge of Italian is required. The language of inscruction is English, with the exception of the Italian language and literature courses unless the literature course is designated, " intranslation. " Classes are small, with emphasis on student-teacher interaction. The university offers course work in several disciplines, including: History, Italian Language and Literature, Art History, Business, International Business, and International Relations. A limited number of internships for students fluent in Italian can be arranged upon request and are offered at international law firms, multinational companies, and international organizations like the Fulbright Commission.

Eligibility
A 2.5 GPA, official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose are necessary for admission to the program.

Student Life
Students have two options for housing: double occupancy in studio apartments located less than 30 minutes by bus from the university which have cooking facilities and private baths; or students are assisted in finding their own housing through real estate agencies (students are placed in hotels up to 12 days upon arrival, during which time the agency assists in finding housing). Students are responsible for their own meals. As a complement to the academic program, students participate in mandatory course-related field visits and additional optional trips to Venice, Pompeii, and or Bologna/Ferrara/Ravenna/Paestum.

The cost of a semester may vary as changes occur in the economies and currencies of the U.S. and Italy. The factors listed below are used to calculate program costs.

  • Tuition at Rio Salado College (assessed according to the student's residency status).
  • Program costs in Italy, including instruction, housing, application and orientation fees, insurance, books and field trips.
  • Transportation to Italy.
Financial Aid
Any financial aid for which students are eligible during the course of their study at Rio Salado College, including Pell Grants, can be used toward the cost of the program in Italy.
