Course Description
Designed to enhance the student's ability to present public speeches confidently and competently. Also designed to improve information literacy and critical thinking skills.

Prerequisites: ENG101 or ENG107, or equivalent.

Special requirements:

60% of the coursework will be in-person; 40% will independent learning at home. Several assessments require delivering speeches, watching television shows, completing self-evaluation forms and peer evaluation forms.

Students are required to use the email application in the RioLearn system to communicate with their instructor.

Due Dates
  1. There are specific due dates for in-class session assignments and for Independent Learning Assignments / Quizzes. Students must discuss the possibility of late work with the teacher before the actual due date or points will be deducted.
  2. The Midterm Exam must be taken in person in class session four or as designated by your instructor.
  3. The Final Exam must be taken by the last date indicated on the course calendar, unless another date was previously approved by the instructor. The Final exam will not be graded and will not be considered as submitted on time if all other assignments are not submitted and graded prior to work on the Final Exam. If the Final Exam is taken before the other assignments are submitted and graded, the score on the final exam will be deducted by 10% or more.
  4. A student who has not turned in the first assignment by the end of the first week of the course may be dropped as 'non-participating.'
  5. Students may NOT turn in more than two assignments at one time, and cannot be more than two assignments ahead of the instructor returning graded assignments and feedback back to them.

Grading Procedure

Grading Assignments: It is important to review the criteria form that will be used for grading assignments so that you understand how assignments will be graded. The criteria form can be found at the end of this Course Syllabus. We expect every student to produce his/her original, independent work for these assignments or a grade of 0 points will be given.

There are 900 total points possible for the course.

Note to students: Final course grades are based on the total number of possible points. The grading scale is administered equally to all students in the course. Do not expect to receive a grade higher than that merited by your total points. No point adjustments will be made for class participation or other subjective factors.

The final course grades will be determined by the following scale:

*Exams are required to be taken in-person for this course. Students who live outside of Maricopa County or are registered with Disability Resources and Services may request to have exams proctored

Grading Procedure

Grading Scale

Letter grades for assignments, examinations, and the course will be determined by the following scale:

810 - 900 points = A (90% - 100%)
720 - 809 points = B (80% - 89%)
630 - 719 points = C (70% - 79%)
540 - 629 points = D (60% - 69%)
0 - 539 points = F (0% - 59%)
Course Competencies
  1. Utilize speech apprehension management techniques.
  2. Identify and use guidelines for ethical public speaking.
  3. Refine critical listening skills through written and/or verbal critiques following speeches by self and others.
  4. Prepare and present at least one informative speech
  5. Prepare and present at least one persuasive speech
  6. Recognize and apply techniques of audience analysis (including but not limited to intercultural sensitivity) in the development of a public speech
  7. Refine information literacy and critical thinking skills by determining an information need for a public speech and accessing and evaluating critically the needed information
  8. Demonstrate the proper use of oral language in a public speech
  9. Use a variety of support materials that serve to clarify, create interest in, and/or prove speech points
  10. Use presentational tools during at least one public speech
  11. Refine writing skills by presenting information in various speech formats
  12. Demonstrate the proper use of nonverbal cues in a public speech
  13. Demonstrate competence in extemporaneous delivery
  14. Demonstrate competence in impromptu speaking by answering questions from the audience following a presentation and/or by presenting an impromptu speech

The Communication Department expects that students will accomplish these competencies using college level writing and reading skills.
