ESL Endorsement requires:

  • Valid Arizona Provisional or Standard teaching certificate (elementary, secondary, or special education)
  • 21 credits of ESL course work
  • Second language learning experience or six hours of a language other than English (below are courses that will apply to this endorsement)
Bilingual Endorsement requires:
  • Valid Arizona Provisional or Standard teaching certificate (elementary, secondary, or special education)
  • 21 credits of Bilingual course work
  • Proficiency in a foreign language other than English

* Note: Students who have taken EDU240 or EDU251 Methods for Teaching SEI/ESL in the Post-Bacc Program or EDU228 SEI/ESL Teaching Methods have met this ESL requirement. EDU240/228 fulfills the ESL requirement, but not an SEI requirement. EDU 220/EPD220, EDU233/251 or EPD233 will meet both an ESL and a SEI requirement.

** is not required if teacher submits 2 years of verified ESL or bilingual teaching experience (verified by district superintendent) to the Az. Department of Education.

The above courses will meet all except three of the requirements for a Bilingual Endorsement.

  • Three semester hours of bilingual methods.
  • Three semester hours of English as a Second Language for bilingual settings.
  • Three semester hours of courses in methods of teaching and evaluating handicapped children from non-English-Language backgrounds. These hours are only required for bilingual endorsements on special education certificates.
