FAQ: Teach for Rio

How does the hiring process work?
Hiring is based on student enrollment. If enrollment exceeds the number of instructors we already have teaching for us, we review the applicant database and begin scheduling interview appointments.

Why is Rio Salado not able to hire adjunct faculty from certain states?
Rio Salado College must abide by state laws in which it is considered to be operating. Employment of adjunct faculty in certain states is viewed as operating and formal authorization to operate in that state must be sought with the appropriate state agency. In selected states, Rio has not currently obtained this authorization and therefore is unable to hire adjunct faculty from that state.

When is the most likely time of the year that I might be hired?
There is no particular time of the year that is better than another for hiring. Unlike traditional campus based colleges that usually begin in September and January, Rio Salado College starts new classes throughout the year.

Are official transcripts required?
Official transcripts are not required until hired. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for your application. They can be mailed or emailed to:

Rio Salado College, Faculty Services
2323 W 14th St., Tempe, AZ 85281
faculty.services@riosalado.edu

What training is provided for new instructors?
If the applicant is hired to teach a class, arrangements are made to complete Rio Salado’s online orientation. New online instructors also receive training on the elearning system, “RioLearn.”

How do online classes work?
Rio Salado’s online courses are fully developed, including syllabus, lessons, and assessments. Students and faculty access their courses and communicate with each other via email through RioLearn. Rio Salado utilizes an asynchronous distance learning model where students and faculty are not required to be online at the same time.

What is the pay rate?
The current pay for adjunct faculty is $863 per load hour. A typical class, such as ENG101, is 3 load hours. Most Science classes are 5.4 load hours.

Do I need to re-apply?
Once an application has been submitted, applicants need not re-apply. Applicant information remains on file for approximately 3 years. You may update your contact information or send an updated resume at any time by contacting Faculty Services.

What if I have not heard back regarding my application?
Rest assured that Faculty Services does have your application. You will only be called for an interview if openings in your field are anticipated. We kindly request that you do not call or email to check on your application. Trust that you will be called if an opportunity becomes available.

Who do I contact for additional questions?
Faculty Services is the centralized hiring unit for adjunct faculty at Rio Salado College and we can be reached by sending an email to faculty.services@riosalado.edu or calling 480-517-8290.
