An Educational Service for Adults in Maricopa County
Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes will improve your basic reading, writing and math skills. These classes will help you become more self-sufficient, improve your job skills and lay the foundation for a better future. You must be 16 years of age or older and be able to verify that you are a legal resident or otherwise lawfully present in the United States to take advantage of this great opportunity.
In 1979, the ABE program was established and enrolled 700 students in its first year. Today, over 13,000 students are taking advantage of this service. Rio Salado is very experienced in developing programs for adults who did not complete high school, high school graduates who need to brush up on their basic academic skills for job retention or advancement, and non-English speaking adults.
“Students who complete the ABE program through Rio Salado generally experience higher self-esteem, an increase in job opportunities and more choices in many areas of life.”
- Blair Liddicoat, Associate Dean, Adult Basic Education
Classes are self-paced. Instructors work with students to identify their individual learning goals and to develop plans to reach those goals.
Classes are funded by the Arizona Department of Education, Adult Education Division.
The Rio Salado ABE program fulfills a great need in Arizona. Nearly half a million adults in Maricopa County are neither enrolled in school nor have a high school credential according to the 2000 U.S. Census. That number carries even more weight when you take into consideration that fact that the greatest predictor of a child’s success in school is the education level of the parent. The ABE program offers adults the opportunity at a better future for themselves and their families. After completing and ABE program, 85 percent of adult learners were successful at improving their employment, increasing both their skills and pay level.
