Students are required to complete an approved MCCCD placement test (ASSET, CELSA, ATB or ACCUPLACER) when the following conditions apply:

  • The student is taking his or her first college credit English, reading and/or math course, or any college course for which English, reading or math is a prerequisite.
  • The student is pursuing a degree and does not have a current valid district approved placement assessment on file or does not have previous college credit in English reading and math.
  • The student for whom English is not the primary language is required to take a test of English proficiency.
  • A student taking teacher prep courses.
  • Further information on placement exams as well as study material can be found here (PDF).
  • The student is a degree seeking individual, 18 years of age or older, who has not earned a high school diploma, GED, or has not earned 60 hours of college credits and is seeking financial aid. This student must take an Ability to Benefit test. It is very important to inform the test proctor if you are testing under Ability to Benefit to insure you will be administered the correct tests.
