The following is an official report from our Maricopa Community Colleges District Police Department and commander regarding yesterday’s incident at our Tempe headquarters. We are grateful this was a false alarm and that you are safe. We greatly appreciate the help from students, local media and other community members who helped us relay this information to the public— and to all of you for opting in to use our Rave Alert system. On Tuesday August 4, 2020 at about 10:49 AM District Police Communications received a phone call from Tempe Police Department. Tempe Police had received a phone call from a female caller who said there had been a shooting at the RSC Tempe Tower and there was 1 victim and there were 4 suspects. There was no other information available.
Maricopa College Police officers from Rio Salado College, GateWay Community College and Phoenix College responded along with multiple police officers from Tempe PD. A lockdown notification was issued to the college.
While performing an area search a female subject was encountered walking near the Hohokam building. Tempe Police Officers contacted her and determined she had been the caller. They were able to determine that she had made the 9-1-1 call to Tempe PD. They also confirmed that she had fabricated the information. Her motivation was not determined.
A search of the Rio Salado College Tempe Main campus buildings, the District Office buildings, the parking garages, along with the surrounding businesses were conducted and there was nothing located concerning this situation. At about 11:21 AM the lockdown was lifted.
