Rhythm, Culture and Community

This 45–60 minute interactive workshop invites participants into a dynamic exploration of African drumming as a powerful tool for communication, cultural expression, and community building. Grounded in African and African diasporic traditions, the session weaves together history, music and lived experience to illustrate how rhythm has long been used to tell stories, sustain identity and bring people together across time and place.

Participants will learn about the cultural significance of drums in African societies, explore how drumming traditions evolved through the African diaspora and engage in hands-on call-and-response drumming that emphasizes listening, collaboration and collective expression.

This experience centers rhythm as a shared language—fostering connection, collective presence and unity.
