Rio Salado College Celebrates the Winston and Dr. Jean Tease Social Justice Scholarship

Building roots that grow throughout a community takes patience, strength and good partnership.

Winston and Dr. Jean Tease shared these attributes throughout their 54-year marriage as they touched hundreds of lives in the greater Phoenix area through both social justice work and education.

Dr. Tease, Rio Salado College Faculty Emertius, enjoyed a more than four-decade career with the Maricopa Community Colleges, including both Rio Salado and Phoenix College. She focused on student success and as a scholar, she valued educational accomplishments and aimed to support opportunities for future students. She holds degrees from all three state universities, with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona, a master’s degree from Arizona State University and a doctorate from Northern Arizona University.

Winston Tease took great pride as a community leader who spent his years of service contributing to positive change and social justice. He worked for several high-profile community organizations during his life - including Phoenix Urban League, Maricopa County Skills Center, Future Development Corporation, and Pop Warner. Early in his career, Winston organized local African American organizations to pool their scholarship funds for students to attend Arizona State University (ASU). ASU matched the pooled community organizations scholarship funds, thus doubling the scholarship funds available to underserved students of need during that time.

The Winston and Dr. Jean Tease Social Justice Endowed Scholarship was established last fall as a tribute to Winston and Jean Tease. Winston Tease passed away in 2020. Dr. Tease continues to take part in Rio Salado events.

Winston and Dr. Jean Tease contributed immensely to their communities. The Winston and Dr. Jean Tease Social Justice Scholarship will support their family legacy for many years to come.

The first scholarship recipient has been selected. There is still an opportunity for a Rio Salado student to receive a scholarship for the 2022-2023 school year.
