College connections don’t have to happen on campus.
For Rio Salado College students, many of those connections happen online. While traditional college campuses may have a student union where classmates gather to study, share a meal or meet new people, Rio Salado students have a virtual place to do many of the same things.
It’s called RioConnect, an online student community where Rio students can meet classmates, exchange ideas, ask questions, share advice and find people with similar interests and experiences.
“In an online environment, it’s easy to feel disconnected from your peers, but distance doesn’t have to mean a lack of connection — anyone is just a click of a button away,” said Kathleen Lüppker, Student Services Manager. “RioConnect builds that bridge and makes connecting easy and fun, while creating a real sense of belonging.”
RioConnect Today
All Rio Salado students have 24/7 access to RioConnect through their online student portal. As of Spring 2026, RioConnect sees an average of 11,000+ active users each month, with many posts receiving between 3,000 and 5,000 views.
RioConnect has five channels where students can connect, share information and find resources:
- Student Hub — The main channel for general conversations.
- Behavioral Science and Human Services Programs — A place for students in these programs to connect.
- Business Students — A community for Rio Salado business students.
- Military and Veteran Students — A place for military-connected students to connect and share experiences.
- College Announcements and Events — A channel where Rio Salado staff share college news and events.

Meeting Fellow Students
On Aug. 20, 2026, student Bev wrote: “I'm Bev from Arizona, I'm a stay-at-home mom and a military wife. My journey through school has been quite a roller coaster since my husband is often away. We've been happily married for 13 years and have three wonderful kids. I was pursuing my RN, but I realized that it wasn't the best fit. So, at 32, I decided to switch my major to X-ray technician. I'm excited to kickstart my new career!”
Student SM replied: “Hi Bev. I am a veteran of the Army myself, working on knocking out some of my pre-req's for the nursing program. I just wanted to wish you good luck in your studies. I love to see military families thrive.”
Seeking Advice
On Aug. 21, 2026, student AR asked: “Anyone here taking BIO 201 and preparing to take exam 3? How are you studying for it? If you have taken it in the past, do you have any tips and tricks?”
Student MW replied: “Hi! I took it last semester, lots to memorize. I use an app called StudyFetch. It helped me a lot. Gave me mini quizzes, helped me in areas I wasn’t performing good. I also printed out different parts of the body and would label them in a mini test. Good luck on your exam!”
Finding Study Buddies
On Aug. 23, 2026, student JJ wrote: “Hello all. I am from Mississippi. I am an online student learning the Spanish language. I will love to connect with other students in Spanish 101. I am a very new Spanish learner. Are there any other students on their Spanish learning journey?”
Student JW replied: “Hola! Estoy aprendiendo español también. I am also learning Spanish. If you would like someone to practice with, I'm up for the challenge, as I could use the practice myself.”
Online Learning Doesn’t Mean Learning Alone
These conversations show some of the ways students can build community while studying online. A student can find someone with a similar background, get advice from a classmate who has taken the same course or connect with someone who shares their academic interests. For students balancing college with work, family and other responsibilities, having a place to ask a question, share an experience or find encouragement can make the online college experience feel a little less solitary.
How to Get Started in RioConnect
- Log into RioLearn with your MEID and password. On your home page, click the RioConnect button on the left menu under your name.
- You can also download the RioConnect mobile app. After you sign into RioConnect, click on your profile picture or initials at the top right. From the drop-down menu, select “Mobile App Access” to get your access code.
