For Rio Salado College student Laura Farnbach, pursuing a career in dental hygiene is more than just a professional goal—it’s a personal mission shaped by her own experiences and a passion for helping others.
Farnbach, a dental hygiene student expected to graduate in May 2027, chose Rio Salado for its strong program and flexible learning options.
“I found that Rio Salado’s dental hygiene program offered more online classes and a stronger educational experience than other colleges,” Farnbach said. “That flexibility has been really important for me.”
Her interest in the field began years earlier, inspired by her orthodontist, Lawrence Andrews, who took the time to explain the science behind her dental care. That curiosity grew into a deeper passion after Farnbach underwent a complex jaw procedure to address chronic pain.
“Learning about my teeth and treatments sparked my fascination with dentistry,” she said. “It made me want to help others understand and improve their own oral health.”
Today, Farnbach is turning that passion into a career while balancing the demands of school, work, and family life as a single mom of four.
“It can be very challenging,” she said. “I work weekends, so I really don’t get breaks while I’m in school. I take it one day at a time, plan what I can, ask for help when I need it, and just do my best.”
Support from scholarships has made a meaningful difference in helping her stay on track.
Farnbach was awarded the Dr. Harry E. Whyte Memorial Scholarship for the 2025 school year. Living about 35 miles from campus, she says the funding helps cover essential costs like gas for commuting to classes and volunteer sites, as well as required supplies for the program.
“In dental hygiene school, we have to volunteer our time, and I also travel for honors requirements,” Farnbach said. “There are also expensive instruments and textbooks every semester. This scholarship helps me manage those costs so I can focus on learning and supporting my family.”
Her story highlights the real impact scholarships can have— not just easing financial strain, but creating space for students to succeed academically and personally.
After completing the program, Farnbach plans to take her board exams and begin working as a licensed dental hygienist. But her journey won’t stop there.
“I plan to continue my education and earn a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene,” she said. “I want to keep learning and growing in this field.”
Looking ahead, Farnbach hopes to use her skills to make a difference both locally and globally, whether that means serving veterans through programs like the VA Health Administration or traveling to underserved communities in need of dental care.
“I want to help as many people as possible,” Farnbach said. “My goal is to provide high-quality, compassionate care and build a reputation as someone patients trust.”
Farnbach also encourages future students to consider Rio Salado, especially those looking for a supportive and flexible learning environment.
“It’s an excellent institution with a more intimate learning experience,” she said. “There’s a strong focus on student success.”
As Farnbach’s story shows, scholarships can play a key role in helping students overcome barriers and stay focused on their goals. With a wide range of opportunities available, scholarships can help cover everything from tuition to transportation and supplies—making it easier to take the next step toward your future.
