Interested in seeing the world while furthering your education at Rio Salado College? Applications are open for the college’s Study Abroad Program. In 2027, the program is going to Portugal, giving students an opportunity to immerse themselves in the nation’s vibrant culture, savory cuisine, and rich history. Rio students in the program will be in Portugal from June 6- 20, 2027.
Through travels, classes, and workshops, students will explore the complex and rewarding intersections between American society and the influences of Portuguese dance, art, philosophy, history, and food. Students will see historic cities and cultural landmarks, connect with local communities, and build meaningful relationships with their Portuguese peers.
Study abroad students will be registered for two in-person 3-credit courses:
- HUM 250 - Ideas and Values in the Humanities (taught by Faculty Chair Dr. Lamont Slater)
- COM263 - Elements of Intercultural Communication (taught by adjunct faculty member Azra Mahmood)
Participants will attend a series of pre- and post trip lectures, as well as attend a live orientation. This program is open to participants aged 18 and older.

Important Dates & Deadlines
- Gilman International Scholarship (for study abroad) application deadline: Oct. 1, 2026
- Study Abroad Program application deadline - Nov. 18, 2026*
- $500 student deposit due to Rio Salado Student Business Services Office - Dec. 1, 2026
- Full payment due; last day to drop for a refund of the $500 deposit - Feb. 26. 2027
- Required in-person pre-departure classes: May 25 - June 3, 2027 (two classes per week)
- Student passport information due to Rio Salado College - March 29, 2027
- Mandatory in-person pre-departure orientation at Rio Salado, Room 515 - May 15, 2027
- In-country program dates: June 6-20, 2027
- Required post trip classes: June 22 - July 15, 2027
