When it comes to the transformative power of education, the poet William Butler Yeats had the right idea when he wrote, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Like a flickering flame, education can energize and illuminate us, burning away ignorance and warming us with the pride of accomplishment. But as anyone who’s ever tried to start a fire in the woods will tell you, it takes a bit of work to get those sparks ignited. When you’re ready to light up your life by continuing your education, a few important questions come to mind: should you go to a community college or a four-year university? Is it better to take classes in-person or online?
While many people still might find the prospect of online learning to be intimidating or confusing— after all, most of us grew up learning in physical classrooms, not digital ones— it has many qualities to recommend it. In some respects, online learning at a community college can be better than taking classes in-person. It offers a wider range of options to customize and tailor your learning experience to suit your own needs, whereas with in-person learning you have to work within their less flexible parameters.
As a “college without walls,” Rio Salado College has been a pioneer of distance learning since our founding in 1978. We’re passionate about the possibilities of online learning and have seen first-hand how going to a community college has changed the lives of our students for the better. We celebrate this during April each year as it is national Community College Month!
Here are seven reasons why online learning at Rio Salado can help make your academic dreams come true.
-
Accessibility
One of the biggest benefits to online education is the accessibility it provides. You can learn where you want—be at home, a public place like a coffee shop or the library, the office on your lunch break, or even a park after you walk your dog. So long as you have reliable internet access and the ability to lock in mentally and concentrate on your studies, you can learn anywhere.
Feeling under the weather? You don’t have to worry about making your classmates sick when you’re learning from home. Do you have health issues or disabilities that would make attending an in-person class difficult? Online learning provides a safe, easy to access alternative that can accommodate your needs. Do you have young children to watch over, elderly family to care for, or pets with serious attachment anxiety? You can stay close to your loved ones while educating yourself at Rio.
"I loved that my classes were going to be completely online so I could continue working without any scheduling conflicts," said Bob Waters, who completed a Post Baccalaureate Teacher Certification at Rio in 2025.

Flexibility
Going back to school while juggling work and personal life responsibilities can be a serious test of your time management skills. Online learning at Rio Salado makes this balancing act a lot easier. You can set a class schedule that works for YOU. Most of Rio’s online classes are asynchronous— that means they don’t have a set-in-stone start time. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, you can take the same class at any time of day. This makes it a lot easier to adjust your schedule as needed, so if you have to miss your normal start time, that’s fine—you can log in and take your course later in the day.
"I chose Rio Salado because I'm a mom who was working full-time and needed something flexible that fit into my schedule," said Rio alumni Melissa Scriver, who graduated with an Associate in Arts in 2025. "I knew about Rio's strong reputation and trusted that it would be a good fit for me."
Rio Salado’s classes also have over 40 start dates a year. What that means is you don’t have to wait a full semester to enroll in a class— you could get started as soon as next week! Rio uses a block calendar system that offers many opportunities for students to jump into a degree program or take a single course.
Do you want to take classes at a faster pace and graduate earlier? We offer accelerated learning options for many of our courses that lets you take them in 8 or less weeks. Take degree programs on a full-time schedule or part-time— whichever best fits your schedule. We also offer microcredential programs that can be completed within a year or less, so you can level up your skills quickly while also adding an achievement to your resume.
Hailey Canella, who graduated from Rio Salado in 2025 with a Bachelor's in Elementary and Special Education, also found the flexibility of online learning to be a boon.
"I chose Rio Salado because the flexibility their online classes offered was exactly what I needed. Taking online classes was an amazing experience. I could learn on my own schedule while still managing my responsibilities."

Affordability
If you’re looking to save money, put down that hammer and spare your piggybank: online learning can be very economical. You could save up to/over half in annual tuition compared to the national average of a public four-year college. Many textbooks are zero cost or available at low prices. When you factor in not having to pay for parking, commuting, and sparing your vehicle the wear-and-tear of daily campus visits that could lead to costly repairs down the line, the amount of money you could save by attending Rio online is significant.
Need help paying for school or want to know more about resources like grants, scholarships, and student aid? Rio’s Financial Aid office can provide you with the information you need to make choices that fit your budget and take the stress out of your tuition payments.
-
Transferability
Rio’s course credits can be transferred to many universities and colleges across the U.S. Interested in earning a four-year degree? Completing a two-year associate degree can help fulfill your general education requirements for a bachelor’s while also saving a lot of money by taking those classes at a more affordable tuition rate. You may also be able to transfer credits you’ve earned from other schools to Rio to get a head start on earning your degree. Rio’s team of advisors can help you determine which of your credits are transferable and offer you guidance on how to initiate the transfer process.
Are you a high school student? Rio Salado offers dual enrollment. Earn college credits and degrees while you work to complete your high school diploma.
"I chose Rio for dual enrollment so I could earn college credits while I was in high school and graduate with an associate degree early," said Breanna Williams, who completed an Associate in General Studies at Rio in 2025.

Reliability
You may worry about having to “go it alone” when you learn online but you won’t be alone at Rio. Rio Salado has a supportive staff of academic advisors, success coaches, and career counselors who are just a call, email, or chat window away from giving you the support you need to succeed. We have a dedicated technology helpdesk team to help you troubleshoot any problems that may come up while you learn online. You’ll be able to communicate with faculty through our RioLearn online platform, which provides a convenient all-in-one portal for enrolling in classes, taking classes, tracking your own academic progress, and handling your Rio account.
"Rio offers you more than just your high school equivalency (HSE) diploma," said 2025 graduate Vanessa Tulley. "You can not only further your education, but have many career pathways to choose from. There is always someone there to guide you."
-
Variety
Are you going back to school to finish a degree? Interested in learning new skills that can get you ready to pivot to a new career or advance to a higher level in your current one? Or do you want to explore different options and see what’s right for you? Rio offers 135+ degree and certificate programs in a wide variety of fields. We offer career training pathways and credentialed programs to get you ready for entering a new profession or advance you further in your career. We even offer transfer pathway programs that can get you admitted to in-state colleges and other institutions once you complete the program.

At Rio Salado College, our online classes never fill up or get cancelled from lack of attendance. If you see a class in our current catalog, you can take it. You don’t have to worry about not being able to go to class because the campus is closed down that day or the weather is too hazardous to go outside. Your classroom is your room! No matter how tumultuous and unpredictable life can be, you can count on your Rio classes.
