High school senior Austin England wanted to make the most of his high school years. That is why he decided to take advantage of Rio Salado College’s dual enrollment program.

“I wanted my high school experience to be more than just earning a diploma,” England said. “Through dual enrollment, I was able to begin preparing for my future career while still in high school.”

England, who attends Deer Valley High School, will serve as the dual enrollment student speaker at Rio Salado’s Commencement Ceremony on May 14, 2026.

Over the last year, he balanced both high school and college coursework at the same time — an experience that required dedication and strong time management skills.

“This required me to balance essentially two worlds at once,” England said. “I had many things on my plate, but this experience taught me discipline, perseverance and time management skills in a way that no traditional high school experience could.”

Throughout his journey, England said the support of his family helped him stay motivated.

“My success is deeply rooted in the support of my family, especially my mom and my church family,” England said. “They believed in me when I doubted myself and reminded me that hard work pays off.”

England also credits his instructors for encouraging him along the way. One teacher in particular made a lasting impression during his math courses.

“My college algebra and statistics teacher took an immense amount of time to encourage her students and push us to accomplish our goals,” England said. “She continues to be a source of support, encouragement and advice.”

One of England’s favorite subjects helped shape his future plans.

“After taking American Sign Language in high school, I fell in love with the language,” England said. “Through my dual enrollment experience, I was able to connect with American Sign Language experts at Glendale Community College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College to continue learning.”

England earned his associate of arts degree from Rio Salado College and his high school diploma in the same week.

“I’m incredibly proud of this accomplishment,” England said. “It has been a rewarding journey, and I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Looking ahead, England plans to continue his education at the University of Northern Colorado, where he will study American Sign Language with the goal of becoming an interpreter.

“My passion for American Sign Language began in high school, and the dual enrollment program helped me strengthen that passion,” England said. “I’m excited to continue my education and pursue a career where I can help others communicate.”

England is one of more than 200 high school students on track to complete a degree with Rio Salado College this year. Rio Salado is the largest provider of dual enrollment in Maricopa County.
