The Associate of Arts (AA), Emphasis in Communication includes a dynamic blend of theory and practical experience that provides students with a solid introduction to the wide-ranging field of Communication. With an associate degree in Communication, students will gain proficiency in a variety of communication contexts including interpersonal, small group, intercultural, organizational, public and professional speaking. This degree prepares students for their bachelor's degree transfer pathway and equips them with the communication skill set valued so highly by employers. Coursework provides the foundational conceptual knowledge and tools to understand, analyze, and respond to communication challenges and opportunities in a variety of contexts.

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses within the program.

- Apply communication theories and practices to develop, maintain and manage effective personal and professional relationships.
- Demonstrate problem solving and decision-making techniques in a variety of communication settings.
- Analyze messages in various communication settings and channels.
- Research and create messages appropriate to the audience, purpose, and context.
- Demonstrate the ability to accomplish communicative goals (self-efficacy).
- Apply ethical communication principles and practices.
- Utilize communication to embrace differences in individual, group and public settings.
- Evaluate public discourse and discuss and/or advocate a course of civic action.
- Display competence in oral, written, and visual communication in various personal and professional contexts.
- Engage in scholarly research in the communication discipline.

The following is the suggested course sequence by term. Please keep in mind:

- The course sequence is laid out by suggested term and may be affected when students enter the program at different times of the year.
- Initial course placement is determined by current district placement measures and/or completion of 100-200 level course and/or program requirements.
- Degree and transfer seeking students may be required to successfully complete a MCCCD First Year Experience Course (FYE) within the first two semesters at a MCCCD College. Courses include FYE101 and FYE103. Course offerings will vary by college. See an academic, program, or faculty advisor for details.
