Dental hygienists provide preventive and therapeutic oral care and teach patients how to practice good oral hygiene. They examine patients’ teeth and gums, record the presence of diseases or abnormalities and may explain the relationship between oral health and systemic health. Hygienists educate patients about how to properly brush and floss teeth. They use power and hand instruments, take X-rays and administer local anesthetics in most states.

Opportunities for Employment

Working in a private dental office continues to be the primary place of employment for dental hygienists. For today’s dental hygiene professional, there are many other career pathways to explore, according to ADHA.org. 

The 2023 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, states that dental hygiene is expected to grow substantially faster than average for all occupations through 2031. Let your dental hygiene education and experience open doors to your career path. Consider the possibilities.

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Dental Hygiene degree is designed to meet the academic requirements for a Licensed Dental Hygienist in Arizona. The program is only offered and available to students located in Arizona. Rio Salado College has not determined whether the program meets or does not meet the academic requirements for licensing in other states.
