Rio Salado College hosted the 30th annual National Adult Education Honor Society (NAEHS) induction ceremony on Thursday, March 7, 2024, commemorating the accomplishments of its 24 newest student inductees.

NAEHS recognizes adult education students, supports student employment opportunities, develops student ambassadors for local adult education programs, and creates adult education awareness with school administrators and state legislators.

During the ceremony, Rio Salado showcased the remarkable achievements of adult learners who have embraced the transformative power of education. The ceremony served as a testament to these individuals' dedication, determination, and persistence in pursuing their educational and career goals.

Among the distinguished speakers, Dr. Greg Pereira, vice president of Student Affairs, shared an insightful reflection, stating, “We consider it a strength to be distinguished by our differences. With that said, what unites this group of NAEHS inductees is their determination - a characteristic that multiple studies show is the single greatest predictor of college success.” Pereira's words embraced the essence of the event and emphasized the commitment and resilience demonstrated by these individuals.

This year's student keynote speaker, Ana Sandoval, started with Rio Salado Adult Education in June of 2023, and her journey demonstrates the power of adult education.

"I am not a testament to sorrow or hardship, but as a living, breathing example of resilience and hope. My life’s journey is marked by trials that could easily break the spirit: drug addiction, homelessness, poverty, abandonment, depression, suicidal thoughts—an onslaught of life's fiercest storms. Yet, here I am before you, not merely unbroken but empowered and strengthened."

Despite juggling a full-time job in a warehouse, Sandoval remained committed to her education, earning an industry-recognized credential in the Warehouse, Inventory, and Logistics offered in partnership with the National Retail Federation (NRF) in the first three months of the program. In addition, Sandoval made significant strides toward obtaining her High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.

What set Sandoval apart was her compassionate spirit and dedication to community service. Beyond the classroom, Sandoval actively contributes to her faith community and engages in philanthropic endeavors, embodying the values of empathy and altruism.

Serving as a source of inspiration and encouragement for those facing similar challenges, “Sandoval’s supportive demeanor creates a nurturing environment where individuals around her feel empowered to pursue their passions and overcome obstacles with resilience,” stated Rio Salado Thomas Instructor Senior Shawna Rouns.

Looking ahead, Sandoval remains steadfast in her aspirations, aiming to enroll in the Business Entrepreneurship program with Rio Salado College to earn another industry-recognized certification. She envisions a future where she and her husband can purchase a new home.

"I doubt my abilities and fight through the lies that tell me I am not smart enough. But we must never let negativity cloud our vision,” Sandoval said. “We must stay true to our dreams, hold on tightly to our aspirations, and continue to push forward, no matter what. We must have the courage to pursue our dreams relentlessly. We must step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown."

Honoring a Legacy

The milestone event also honored the chapter’s founder, retired Associate Dean of Instruction and Adult Education Blair Liddicoat. Rio celebrated Liddicoat’s remarkable contributions and enduring legacy and was reminded of his dedication to adult education and lifelong learning.

Liddicoat’s vision and tireless efforts have impacted more than 700 lives and fostered a culture of excellence and inclusivity. His leadership and commitment to the National Adult Education Honor Society principles inspired staff and leadership to strive for greatness and uphold the values of scholarship, service, and leadership.
