Rio Celebrates National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week
Adult Education is an economic catalyst
Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

Rio Salado College, in partnership with the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, invites you to join us in observing National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, Sept. 18-22, 2023.

Each year, Congress recognizes one week as National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week to increase public awareness of the vital role that adult education and family literacy play in our nation’s well-being.

Rio's Adult Education is a core partner in the Arizona workforce system and connects learners to in-demand career training and livable wage employment. Rio Salado College has provided award-winning adult education services on behalf of the Maricopa Community Colleges since 1978 and is Arizona’s largest provider. Rio partners with ARIZONA@WORK, other Maricopa Community Colleges, community organizations, and employers to create flexible pathways to college and careers.

Adult Education and Literacy Facts

  • More than 30 million Americans over the age of 25 – or one out of every nine U.S. citizens – do not have a high school diploma. (See source).
  • The number of working-age immigrants is projected to increase to 38.5 million by 2035. Immigrants will play the leading role in future growth of the U.S. working-age population and many will need access to job training and English literacy classes. (See source).
  • According to the National Skills Coalition, by 2024, 48 percent of job openings will be middle-skill and 32 percent will be high-skill. This means that nearly 80 percent of all job openings will require more than a high school degree

Students aged 16+ and not in high school who participate in Rio’s Adult Education program can not only earn their high school equivalency diploma or improve their english language skills, but have the opportunity to explore career pathways and hone their skills so that they can advance their careers through a college education or training.

Meet Rio’s Graduates

Beverly Felix and Saray Martinez, both 2023 HSE graduates from Rio Salado College Adult Education, embarked on an inspiring journey together this year fueled by their shared determination and dreams. The two launched a podcast to encourage other adults to jump into learning. The podcast came about utilizing the skills they learned from Rio.

Beverly Felix: Empowered to lead

Felix came to Rio Salado College based on the word of a friend.

“My dear friend, Veronica, was the first person with whom I shared that I didn’t have a high school diploma,” Felix said. “She told me about Rio’s Adult ACE program. I applied, and it was the best decision that I have made for my transition to college.”

Adult ACE is a two-year scholarship program supporting adult students who demonstrate financial need. It provides funding for up to 25 college credits and offers academic guidance throughout the program. Felix earned her high school equivalency diploma in 2023, and now, through Adult ACE, is earning college credits.

Saray Martinez: Aspiring Mentor

Martinez knew that education would be the key to a better future after coming to a crossroads in her life

I only finished school up to 9th grade. I didn't have much experience,” Martinez said. “My three daughters were my priority. I knew I had to work on myself, and getting my HSE diploma was the first step.”

After weighing her options, Martinez enrolled at Rio Salado College.

“I chose Rio because they are super flexible and willing to work with you,” Martinez said. “Everyone has been very helpful and understanding, and the teachers are amazing.”

After earning her HSE diploma, Martinez decided to pursue career training in business and entrepreneurship through Rio’s adult education program.

Sharing a Dream

It was Felix who first came up with the podcast idea.

"Before the pandemic, I wanted to start a podcast, and now I can do that,” she said.

The podcast project fell in line with Martinez’s plans, too, to be an entrepreneur.

"I love the idea of being my own boss and setting my own hours, especially because I am a single mom of three young girls."

Together, they have combined their stories and passions into a podcast that not only empowers them but also sheds light on the incredible journeys of adult education learners striving to achieve their academic and career goals.
