The Honors Achievement Award (HAA) is a participation-based scholarship that is awarded at the END of the semester, only after the successful completion of ALL the following HAA requirements. In other words, this is a reimbursement scholarship based on your participation, enrollment, and successful completion of all HAA requirements in the semester.

To participate, you must apply at the beginning of the semester. For example, if you want to participate in the Fall semester, you must apply at the beginning of the Fall semester. Once you are a participating member, and you maintain eligibility, you do not need to reapply.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible to participate in a semester, you must:

1. Hold a minimum cumulative Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) district-wide GPA of 3.25 or higher.
AND
Completed a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours (must be 100 level or above) at one or any combination of the MCCCD colleges.

2. Ensure that proof of lawful presence in the U.S. is on record through Admissions & Records. International students with an F-1 Visa and an I-94 on record through Admissions & Records are eligible to apply. A copy of this paperwork must be submitted to the Admissions & Records office. HAA Participation Requirements:

  • Enroll in and complete a minimum of six (6) credits per semester.
  • Take one (1) - three (3) credit class for Honors credit each semester. The Honors Department must enroll you in an Honors Only section.
  • Complete Honors 100 (co-curricular course)
  • Complete your Honors class or contract with a grade of ‘C’ or better.
  • Complete the semester with a minimum cumulative district-wide GPA of 3.25 or higher.

  • The award amount is based on the number of credit hours completed during the semester in which a student participates. Awards are for the Fall and Spring semesters only; HAA does not apply to the Summer sessions. Scholarship funds will be awarded upon completion of all HAA Participation Requirements.

Scholarship Award Amounts

  • $500 for 12+ credit hours a semester
  • $325 for 9 - 11 credit hours a semester
  • $244 for 6 - 8 credit hours a semester

Applying/Getting Started

  1. Fill out the Honors Program Application. By applying for the Honors Achievement Award (HAA) Scholarship, the student will also be joining the Maricopa County Community Colleges Honors Program at Rio Salado. Submit your completed application via the link above. Please allow two (2) to three (3) weeks to process your application. Once your eligibility is determined an email will be sent to your Rio Salado's student email. If you are not eligible at the time that you apply, you will receive an email explaining the reason. Eligibility is once again reviewed at the conclusion of the semester, if you meet the requirements then, you will receive a follow-up email regarding your current status.

  2.  Upon receiving a student’s application, the Honors Office will direct the student to Advising to be enrolled in the Honors section of their requested course).

  3. Awarding of HAA Scholarship Funds. HAA scholarship funds will be awarded after the following has been verified:

    • All grades for the semester have been posted - including grades from other MCCCD campuses.
    • Grade for your Honors course is a ‘C’ or better. 
    • Completion of Honors 100 (co-curricular course)
    • Your cumulative district-wide GPA continues to be a 3.25 or higher.

How the Scholarship is Disbursed
