Prepare For Your Advising Session

Advisors are here to help you succeed in your academic and career goals and help you get the most out of your college experience.  Please see the tips below in order to best prepare for your advisement session. Advisors are here to support you and help you make informed decisions about classes, programs, and steps to take.  Decisions about your educational plans will ultimately be your responsibility.

Prior to Your Advising Session

Please note that as you review these items you may have some questions for your advisor. Come prepared with a list of questions that you want to ask your advisor.

  • Review and select a program.  If you are unsure of your goal, see the resources available through Career Services.
  • Review program requirements and the class schedule for potential classes.
  • Review Become a Student and at least complete all the steps listed below before the advisement step.
    • Get Admitted
    • Review course placement options
    • Have your transcripts evaluated for course placement or transfer Transcript evaluation
    • Review ways to pay for college, including Financial Aid
    • Take the online New Student Orientation (NSO101) 
  • Review the Guide to Help New Students.

During your Advisement Session

  • Discuss your career, educational, and life goals.
  • Review requirements and other recommended activities to meet your goals.
  • Review transfer opportunities if university transfer is needed.
  • Review outside commitments and how these will affect scheduling your classes and course load.
  • Complete a semester by semester plan including an anticipated graduation date.

Please note for phone appointments designate time in a quiet environment where you can be engaged, take notes, and ideally have computer access. During in-person sessions please turn off your phone and show respect as your advisor is here to help.  

After your Advisement Session

  • Follow through on actions discussed and identified by you and your advisor.
  • Plan your next visit with your advisor at least once a semester.
  • Contact your advisor between sessions as you have questions.
  • Utilize other college resources in order to successfully complete your goals.
  • Check in with your instructor when you have questions regarding your class.
  • Check messages and emails regularly.
  • Consult with your advisor before changing your schedule, transferring or withdrawing from the college.
  • Remember that your advisor is here to help and support you, but your success is ultimately up to you.
